We’re super excited to get out of beta and release our brand new 2.0 version today! Today’s release include three important aspects that we woud like to tell you about.
New Features
The official release includes significant new features requested by our early users:
Friends Sync: SocialFolders makes it now easy and seamless for you to access the social content that matters to you (think of that album on your friends’ profile of your group trip to Rome) while respecting the privacy settings of your friends across all applicable social services. Friends’ content is now available for Facebook, Flickr, Twitter and Instagram – without having to invite your friends to SocialFolders. We will extend this capability to other services soon.
Versioning support for Google Docs: Users can connect with Google Docs, work on documents offline, and SocialFolders will automatically sync the changes back to Google Docs in the form of new revisions in that doc.
New services: SocialFolders now integrates with Twitter and SmugMug, on top of Instagram, Facebook, Flickr, Picasa, Photobucket, Box, Google Docs, and YouTube.
Facebook Photos I’m tagged in: You can now download automatically in a dedicated folder all the Facebook photos where you’re tagged.
New privacy settings: When you upload new photos or albums through SocialFolders, you are now able to set them as private or public by default.
New Architecture
There has been as well a lot of work under the hood. The amount of files that our early users have downloaded or uploaded through SocialFolders during the past 3 months has exceeded our expectations: we’ve just past the 2.5 million files mark last night! In order to deliver our service to a much larger audience, we had to revisit our architecture and make it more robust, more perfomant and more scalable.
For the techies among our readers, we will go through some of the nuts and bolts of our new backend system in a future post here. But the expected result is – we hope – a faster and more responsive service to all our users.
Free and Premium Plans
Yes, there is now a Free and a Premium plan. We have to pay the bills… But we really hope that it won’t prevent anyone to use the service, hence our offer to let you extend your Free plan’s capabilities by inviting other people. The Free plan lets you connect to up to 3 services and manage 500 files through SocialFolders. When you invite a new user to SocialFolders, you can connect to an additional service and both of you get 500 additional files in your quota.
NB: As an existing user, if you already use SocialFolders with more than 3 services, you can keep them without having to switch to the Premium plan. If you already manage more than 500 files, your limit will be increased to the number of files you currently have.
The Premium plan is $9.99 a year or $1.99 a month – that’s a reasonable price for those of you that need to access any of our current services, and manage up to 5,000 files through SocialFolders.
